FAQS

Do prospective students need to audition with an instrument?
-
For students auditioning into the third grade we do not require them to audition with an instrument, however, if they play an instrument proficiently, we would love to have them demonstrate their level.
-
For students who are auditioning to enter the fourth or fifth grade, it is strongly advised that they come to the audition prepared with a selection on their instrument.

Do we accept incoming fourth and fifth grade students into the music magnet program?
-
Yes! We do accept incoming fourth and fifth grade students, however, the space is limited depending on how many students are currently in the class.
-
Students who already play bowed string instruments are preferred, but we also accept students playing other instruments, with the condition that they participate in a summer program or lessons to learn a bowed string instrument before they enter the program.

What if my child only wants to sing or play one instrument?
Every child in the music magnet program participates in all aspects of the program. Though many of the students enter the program with a preference in one strand of music, every student learns strings, choir, steel drums, mandolins, music theory, and participates in many other learning experiences while in out music magnet program.

What if my child has special needs?
The music magnet program accepts students based on their musical aptitude and talent. We are happy to make any accommodations or modifications to our audition process or magnet program to include and welcome each and every one of our talented students.

Do students learn how to play piano?
The music magnet program focuses on ensemble experiences. Piano, guitar and harp are primarily solo instruments, and therefore are not taught in this music magnet program. Many of the music magnet students choose to pursue piano instruction privately.
